Tantra, the art of sacred sexuality, regards female sexuality as a powerful gateway to spiritual awakening. But the essence of female sexuality has got almost lost in the age of patriarchy. In pre-patriarchal times, women would be initiated into the mysteries of the feminine by crones who carried the feminine wisdom in their bodies. The time has come for this tradition to return. And this weekend is your opportunity.
On this weekend, Shakti will take women on a journey to awaken the spiritual power of their sexuality. This will happen through an introduction to and immersion in the qualities of the feminine: he wisdom principle of being, pure receptivity, connecting to source, entering the unknown, roundness and spontaneous creation. You will experience these qualities awakened in your consciousness, and particularly in the consciousness of your sexuality.
The awakening of female sexual energy requires a) a deep embracing and welcoming of this energy and b) a clearing of blockages in the chakras to enable the energy to flow freely up through the chakras. Shakti will assist each woman in the group with this process. Be prepared for an utter transformation of your sexuality. Conventional sexuality sets up a cycle of endless needs, wants and frustrations that keep us craving for more or cynically avoiding sex at all costs. This approach to sexuality is a deep dropping within, a giving up of the idea that there is something to "get" or to defend, and a surrendering into your essence. From there, an immense source of power starts to flow through you.
The material Shakti will be working with comes from her book Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook. Each woman will receive a copy of the book as a guide to take them further along the path.

Workshop Intensive

In this training, Shakti will take women through an intensive experiential journey of opening to the flow of awakened female sexual energy. This happens through the clearing of blocks in the chakras or energy vortexes in the body. The training is based on the material held in Sexual Awakening for Women: A Tantric Workbook. You will have an opportunity to encounter this work through direct transmission by the author.

Clearing blocks in the chakras

Each chakra or energy "hub" in the body holds specific unconscious patterning that needs to be cleared for energy to move freely up the body. This workshop intensive creates an opportunity for the systematic clearing of blocks held in each chakra. Here are some examples

Base chakra (on the perineum): Clearing our love relationship with the body, or relationship with desire, life and death.
Second chakra: Clearing tribal and ancestral blockages to the flow of awakened sexual energy, learning to listen to yoni (vagina) and following the flow of her energy through the body's circuits. Working through the virgin/whore/women's union archetypes in our psyches. Feeling safe to be sexual.
Third chakra: Embracing our power, moving through duality, meeting men and the inner masculine.
Fourth chakra: Loving our breasts, connecting heart and sex, dropping false identities, learning how to process feelings deeply and fully.

Awakening female sexual energy

When sexual energy wakes up in our bodies, it is called Kundalini. Kundalini is like a snake lying at the base of the spine. When it awakens, it starts to move up the body in an undulating, opening, receptive way. When this energy opens fully in us, it takes us into skydancing - the experience of full body orgasm and an ecstatic opening to the unknown, the mystery, the divine. Shakti will guide you into this experience through breathwork, movement and touch.

Two phases

The workshop is presented in two phases. Phase 1 contains most of the material we work with in the first two chakras, and Phase two completes the process with the third and fourth chakras. It is possible to do just phase 1, but not just phase 2. The ideal is to do both. For those who can do the first phase in July, this gives you time to integrate before doing the second phase. For international visitors, it is ideal to do both phases in one go in December.

Facilitation training

The workshop will give women the basic tools, skills and background to be able to facilitate this journey for groups of women. Some of the facilitation skills you will be guided through are:

how to hold a women's circle

sexual somatic presencing - feeling what is happening in the bodies of participants, and guiding them deeper.

The training is for women who have a deep desire to awaken female sexual energy as a spiritual force in their beings. The venue for the first edition of phase 1 (July 2012) is Scarborough, a magnificently beautiful nature spot close to Cape Point in Cape Town. We will be staying and working in a wooden house amongst the indigenous fynbos, and very close to the magnificent ocean where whales frolic this time of the year.

The venue for the December events is the farm n'au !ma, which is run in deep respect for nature as a place of retreat and ceremony. It is situated between Montague and Ladysmith, at the foot of the Anysberg. Accommodation is provided in beautiful Karoo style houses with broad verandas, fireplaces, gas stoves and fridges. There is an exquisite kloof on the farm, and some delicious dams. The night sky of the Karoo is something to experience. The farm is about 4 – 5 hours from Cape Town, and 3 hours from George.

19 May: Skydancing Woman

This day is a pure celebration of female sexuality. Through breath work, movement, dance and embodied meditation, we will connect deeply to our female sexual essence and allow that to move through our bodies. Skydancer is the literal translation for dakini, the Tibetan Tantric terms for the feminine principle. When woman's sexual energy wakes up, it dances through our bodies and into the infinite, ecstatic sky.

About Deva Ambu

Ambu (http://devaambu.com) is a disciple of the enlightened master Osho; living and working since 30 years at his International resort (Pune, India). She has a Master's in psychology (U.C.L University of Louvain, Belgium) and a postgraduate training in Sofrology (E.M.S. Barcelona, Spain).

Ambu studied Kundalini Yoga, Dance and theatre in Paris (1971-1977), where she was also guided by a Shameness, a " Woman of Wisdom ".

Skydancing is a deeply authentic expression of the wild woman in all of us. This teaching from woman to woman takes some doing in our current western mind set. Women have been brought up to believe that most or all of their sexual expression is wrong and must only be presented in an acceptable way according to the culture. Skydancing invites a great unlearning. In this unlearning our true being begins to emerge and we dance again. It happens when we let go, and allow what wants to dance through us.

In my work with Tantra, an ancient eastern tradition that follows sexual energy as a doorway to consciousness, I have learnt that sexual awakening is linked to the opening of the chakras or "energy wheels" (represented by the spirals on the front page image). When the opening of the chakras happens in the body, it literally feels like an energy snake that uncoils at the base of the body and rises up through the crown of the head. For me personally, this rising brings a soft ecstasy that ripples onto the farthest shores of my life… It also brings a deep contentment with existence.

Sexual energy becomes illuminated when the repressions that block us at each of the chakras or energy points in the body are lifted. These repressions are the result of our conditioning, our patterning and the scars that are left by our life experiences. I believe that it is possible to bring our repressions to awareness and release them by working in a sacred circle of women.

What happens on the retreat

My focus is on the awakening of consciousness, not on teaching technique or improving performance (though these things follow of their own accord). I use the following methods to evoke awareness:

We process body memories through acting and embodiment.
We deepen awareness of female sexuality through breath work and other Tantric techniques.
We reflect on our stories and vision our "this-here-now" realities through creating with the earth and writing.
We meditate and do guided visualizations to deepen our awareness of essence flowing through us.
We use sound, chanting, movements and dancing focused on a particular expression of our sexual energy to awaken the body to its inherent knowing.
We have strong interactions with nature and the elements to reconnect us to our being-of-the-earth, the origin of our sexual energy.

Who is the retreat for?

This retreat is a follow-up on the Wild Woman/Skydancing retreat that I have presented at this location for several years. It is suitable to women who have either done a woman's retreat with me before, or have done significant personal or group work with me.

Retreat focus

In the Skydancing Retreat and Chakra Workshop that women have attended with me so far, we have encouraged the awakening of female sexual energy in the first to third chakras. This retreat is focusing on the awakening of the fourth to seventh chakra in women, and specifically, the directing of sexual energy or kundalini through these chakras.

The heart chakra wakes up when we become willing to feel everything and still let our hearts remain open. Come take the space to feel your wild, uncontained heart, and to give it wings - let it fly - take it Skydancing!

4. The One Self

No nakedness is required and no direct sexual contact with others. It is entirely possible to wake up the beauty and power of your own sexuality through dropping into the bliss of your own experience - which is what we will be doing on this workshop.

Tantra, the art of conscious sexuality, is a practice that has since ancient times been led by women. It is a special calling in my life to support women into the full flowering of where our sexuality can take us. The main elements of this work are:
• Understanding the unique qualities of female sexuality
• Opening to the flow of sexual energy/ kundalini through meditation, dance and breath work
• Unleashing blocks or integrating what has prevented this full flow through the chakras.

Working with the chakras

Tantra is a practice that cultivates awareness of our oneness with existence through sexual awakening. This happens through the opening of the chakras. Chakras are energy centers in the body where consciousness collects around particular patterns. Typically in sexual encounter, we send our sexual energy outwards. We may experience deep bliss for a while, but generally this does not last. With Tantric awareness, our sexual vitality starts to move up our bodies like a snake that uncoils, from the root or base of the body all the way up through the crown. Sexual energy moves from the first chakra up. This process is often known at the Uncoiling of the Snake (sexual energy or kundalini). Many women have negative body memories from sexual experience. These can be from a range of sources, including direct invasion, inappropriate contact, painful or insensitive sex and judgments about the realm of the sexual. While engaging your personal healing journey in this realm will be intensified by private sessions with me, the continuous course will create a space for us to collectively and individually release and integrate past inhibiting memories. A continuous course

From this month, I will again be running an ongoing course on Tantra for women. The course will consist of regular day workshops in which we will systematically work through the chakras. There are four of five themes per chakra. Each workshop will be an exploration of one or two of these themes dealing with specific elements of women’s sexuality related to that chakra.

You will benefit most from the workshops if you attend them from the beginning. However, the workshops will be structured in such a way that you can attend any workshop at any stage (that is, you can enter and exit the process as it suits you.) I will advertise each workshop in a separate mail as well.

Growing with other women

Sunday 20 February: Body and Desire

Morning: Saying yes to the body

The first chakra will only open when we say yes to being embodied, to being on the planet in a body. We women often view our own bodies critically. In this workshop, you will learn ways of coming to love your body through beautiful creative exercises. We will also begin to experience how sexual energy moves in a woman’s body trough breathing working with the perineum and movement in the pelvic area. This is the beginning of the journey of waking up female sexual energy in your being.

Afternoon: Embracing desire

The flow of our sexual energy starts at the root or first chakra, which is the seat of our desire. In its primal form, this energy is raw sexual desire, our primary eroticism. In order to practice Tantra, it is essential that we first embrace our dragon fire – our capacity for desire. In my experience, women often suppress or deny this quality of our sexuality. In this workshop I invite you to a fun, safe exploration of your desire. With it with come a flourish of new life force available to you.

Morning: Our cosmic sexuality

Women’s sexuality has a cosmic quality to it. It is elemental. It rises up in our bodies through the earth. Come discover and celebrate the flow of this energy with me in a morning of dancing and breath meditation.

Afternoon: The dance of life and death

One of the main factors that block our flow in the first chakra is our survival fear. If you are staying in a relationship because you are afraid of not being able to provide a livelihood for yourself outside of it, this factor will impact on your first chakra sexual energy. At the root of it, all our survival fears relate to the fear of death. There is a beautiful Tantric meditation that helps us to accept and embrace the inevitable passing of things. This will be the focus of our workshop. As you come to accept death, you are ready to be fully alive.

The continuous course

I am running a series of courses for women on themes related to the main chakras or energy centers in the body along which sexual energy travels. Each theme is covered in a three hour workshop; you are welcome to attend any individual workshop as they are presented as loose standing experiences.

Third/solar plexus chakra

The third or solar plexus chakra is the center of our personal power. It is from here that we radiate our unique energy into the world. This center is dominated by the masculine energy flow through the chakras. It is the chakra that has been developing in the world over the last 2000 years - our individuation from the tribal mind, the development of reason, intellectual discernment, definition and duality. All women who have achieved in their own right have had to develop this center strongly - in many, if not most cases, to the detriment of our femininity. Often this development in us has been forced and not authentic; we have tried to be like men, and so deep down still struggle to embrace who we are and let our light shine powerfully in the world. It is essential for our evolution and our awakening that this chakra gets strong and alive in us as women. Sexually, a strong solar plexus chakra gives us the ability to choose our partners from a place of personal affinity rather than social conditioning or unconscious programming.

The third chakra is the home of our analytical, defining and discerning abilities. While the world tends to place too much emphasis on these abilities, it is paradoxically also true that these skills are not clearly developed in most of us. The reason is that our discernment is clouded by unconscious processes and dualities. In this workshop, I will teach you techniques for developing crystal clear discernment and ways of integrating unconscious dualities.

25 September: Choosing from pure delight

Love and sexual attraction as experienced in the third chakra goes beyond our tribal impulse. If we respond from the third chakra, our romantic and sexual decisions are no longer dominated by the need to find acceptance. We choose from our own affinity and liking. This is an essential step on the spiritual journey. In this workshop, we will work on your ability and willingness to choose pure enjoyment and to trust your liking.

16 October: Men, lovemaking and our inner masculine

A central direction of Tantra is the integration of masculine and feminine in each of us. The third chakra is masculine dominant, and thus a good place to explore our relationship as women with men and the masculine inside ourselves. This morning will be an exploration of

*Yoni is the Tantric word for the vulva. The yoni holds qualities of awareness that are so vital that Buddha called the yoni the gateway to nirvana (see picture above). Within most women today, there is a split between the virgin and the whore - the desire to be the one, the fear to be the other. Since the story was told that Eve bit the apple, we have struggled to believe as women that the sacred and the sexual can co-exist in us, that we can live and express the full power of our sexuality without losing our innocence, our purity. By bringing awareness to this dynamic in us, an a playful way, we can undo the split that has kept us back for so long, and change our relationship with each other from being critical to being supportive.

Tantric Practice for Women

Tantra, the art of conscious sexuality, is a practice that has since ancient times been led by women. What has been a secret and mystical practice has now become accessible to seekers who are on a committed path of awareness. It is a special calling in my life to support women into the full flowering of where our sexuality can take us. The main elements of this work are:
• Understanding the unique qualities of female sexuality
• Opening to the flow of sexual energy/ kundalini through meditation, dance and breath work
• Unleashing blocks or integrating what has prevented this full flow through the chakras.

Working with the chakras

Tantra is a practice that cultivates awareness of our oneness with existence through sexual awakening. This happens through the opening of the chakras. Chakras are energy centers in the body where consciousness collects around particular patterns. Typically in sexual encounter, we send our sexual energy outwards. We may experience deep bliss for a while, but generally this does not last. With Tantric awareness, our sexual vitality starts to move up our bodies like a snake that uncoils, from the root or base of the body all the way up through the crown. Sexual energy moves from the first chakra up. This process is often known at the Uncoiling of the Snake (sexual energy or kundalini). Many women have negative body memories from sexual experience. These can be from a range of sources, including direct invasion, inappropriate contact, painful or insensitive sex and judgments about the realm of the sexual. While engaging your personal healing journey in this realm will be intensified by private sessions with me, the continuous course will create a space for us to collectively and individually release and integrate past inhibiting memories. On female sexual energy

Sexual energy is a tremendous source of vitality and life force. When we own and live our sexual energy, we incarnate – we come to embody the goddess within. We wake up to the moment. Through our sexual flow as women, the worlds are birthed. And yet this potential lies dormant in so many of us. The snake, the kundalini, the origin of our embodied vitality, is there, at the base of the spine, but it slumbers, and it rarely gets touched.Until the wild woman in us wakes up to who she really is.

Uncoiling the snake

In my work with Tantra, an ancient eastern tradition that follows sexual energy as a doorway to consciousness, I have learnt that sexual awakening is linked to the opening of the chakras or "energy wheels" (represented by the spirals on the front page image). When the opening of the chakras happens in the body, it literally feels like an energy snake that uncoils at the base of the body and rises up through the crown of the head. For me personally, this rising brings a soft ecstasy that ripples onto the farthest shores of my life… It also brings a deep contentment with existence.

Sexual energy becomes illuminated when the repressions that block us at each of the chakras or energy points in the body are lifted. These repressions are the result of our conditioning, our patterning and the scars that are left by our life experiences. I believe that it is possible to bring our repressions to awareness and release them by working in a sacred circle of women.

What happens on the retreat

My focus is on the awakening of consciousness, not on teaching technique or improving performance (though these things follow of their own accord). I use the following methods to evoke awareness:

The venue

The farm n'au !ma, which is run in deep respect for nature as a place of retreat and ceremony, is situated between Montague and Ladysmith, at the foot of the Anysberg. Accommodation is provided in beautiful Karoo style houses with broad verandas, fireplaces, gas stoves and fridges. There is an exquisite kloof on the farm, and some delicious dams. The night sky of the Karoo is something to experience. The farm is about 4 – 5 hours from Cape Town, and 3 hours from George.

Safe to feel Sexual

The second chacra which is in our sacral region, is where we feel our sense of safety in the world. It is the nest from whence we venture into relating. If we feel unsafe, we sense this as a contraction in the pits of our stomachs. As part of my ongoing series for women on the chakras, I am focusing our next women's workshop on sexuality and safety. I have been very aware recently that our ability as women to feel sexual - to allow ourselves to express our sensuality, and for that to be seen - is strongly influenced by whether we feel safe or not. For some women, feeling unsafe has become an unconscious habit that keeps us permanently closed. Some of us have had sexual experiences in the past that felt unsafe. Even if you generally feel safe, it is good to know that you will be able to respond appropriately if ever you did not feel safe.

In this workshop, we will focus on how we perceive men in our world, and how that gets reflected in the relationship between our inner masculine and feminine. Our inner masculine is the one who knows how to keep us safe; if we are in right relationship to him, we can walk through the world feeling safe, open and free in our sexuality.

A Tantric Workshop for Women
Saturday 8 August 10am - 5pm

Since ancient times, mystical traditions have understood that women's sexual power is a gateway to transcendence and a source of unconditional love. Why is it then that women have been so reluctant to own and live the power of their sexuality? For many women, past experience and patriarchal conditioning has raised in us this fundamental fear: For a woman to be in her sexuality, she has to sacrifice her innocence. And sure, as we open to our sexuality, we shed our naivity - we come to experience. But opening to our sexuality also means coming to embody purity - becoming a vehicle for pure power to move through us.

Join me for a day workshop in which we will explore, through dance and enactment, the archetypes that have kept us stuck in old beliefs. We will then use breathwork, dance and ecstatic meditation to open to the full potential of feminine archetypes - to the many expressions of our pure power. What better way to celebrate Women's Day?

Yoni is the Tantric word for the vulva. The yoni holds qualities of awareness that are so vital that Buddha called the yoni the gateway to nirvana (see picture above). And yet, many of us have grown up to be suspicious of the yoni. The word "cunt" is used as a derogatory term, and yet its original meaning, "kund", is that of the sacred container into which all the rivers of life flow. In this workshop, we will use movement, visualization, inner dialogue and breath work to access the wisdom and beauty that comes so us through our yonis.

Working with the chakras

A continuous course

From April this year, I have been running an ongoing course on Tantra for women. The course consists of regular mini workshops in which we will systematically work through the chakras. There will be three or four workshops per chakra. Each workshop will be an exploration of a specific element of women’s sexuality related to that chakra.

You will benefit most from the mini workshops if you attend them consistently. However, the workshops are structured in such a way that you can attend any workshop at any stage (that is, you can enter and exit the process as it suits you.)

Group discussions and sharing
Shamanic journeywork
Body tracking
Collaging, journaling and other creative expressions
Movement and dance
